We just got back from our annual trip out to Vancouver Island. Every year we spend the same week at a resort, but usually try to do something new along the way there. This year we rented a house on a little island in the Nanaimo Harbour. We kind of stumbled upon it and didnt really know much about the island before coming here. But the moment we stepped off the little boat we fell in love.
There are no paved roads on the island and very few cars (maybe a couple dozen), a lot of people have golf carts to get around the island. The beaches are beautiful and quiet and the atmosphere is so peaceful. It is a super small island and we easily walked around it with the kids, although Domonik’s broken leg made for longer walks.
Our first night we arrived pretty late so we had dinner at the Dinghy Dock Pub. On the patio we watched boats in the harbour and people kayak over to have a drink. They had a great little ‘fishing hole’ to keep the kids occupied while waiting for dinner.
Over the next week we explored as much as the island as much as we could. There are so many trails that lead to different beaches that we couldn’t get to them all, but we found a few that were great for the kids.
At one of the main parks there is a huge Heron colony. There are about 10 nests up in the tree and it was really neat to watch them fly in and out as well as call to one another.
The kids had such a great time and there was never a dull moment. The Ahoy Guesthouse provided so many games and toys for the kids they really felt so at home. We also collected rocks from the beach and painted them on the patio.
The last night we stayed there was a Friday and no matter where we are we always have family movie night on Fridays. So the kids settled in and we popped way too much popcorn and enjoyed.
And they also made sure to sign the guestbook before leaving.
We had such a wonderful time on this little island. Domonik requested we go back again next year so he can explore without a cast and we can’t wait!
